Free circulating DNA

It is the DNA that is normally released from all cells as a result of normal cell renewal processes and which can, with particular procedures, be isolated from various biological fluids including blood. During pregnancy, a small amount of circulating fetal DNA is also present in the maternal blood. It is from the study of free circulating DNA extracted from maternal blood that the non-invasive prenatal test is performed using Next Generation Sequencing techniques.
